Welcome to Calabasas TMS Center. Our TMS Therapy team is led by Dr. Mindy Werner-Crohn, an expert in treating depression and anxiety disorders. Calabasas TMS Center also has a unique approach to patient care through our “TMS Program for Success”, which is comprehensive, collaborative and compasionate.
Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation or TMS therapy is an FDA-cleared medical treatment for depression that is safe, effective, and does not require medication or invasive procedures. Calabasas TMS Center uses both the Brainsway™ and the NeuroStar® TMS Therapy systems for patients suffering from depression who have not achieved satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant treatment.
This system uses Precision Pulse TMS™ technology to generate a pulsed magnetic field, similar in type and strength to those produced by a magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) machine, to focally stimulate function in brain regions known to affect mood.During treatment, which is performed in our offices under the supervision of Dr. Mindy Werner-Crohn, the TMS magnet rests on the front left part of your head over a part of the brain called the left prefrontal cortex. This part of the brain is involved with mood regulation, and therefore is the location where the magnetic fields are focused. These magnetic fields do not directly affect the whole brain; they only reach about 2-3 centimeters into the brain directly beneath the treatment coil. As these magnetic fields move into the brain, they produce very small electrical currents. These electrical currents activate cells within the brain which are thought to release neurotransmitters like serotonin, nor-epinephrine, and dopamine to treat depression.
TMS Therapy is:
- Non-invasive, meaning that it does not involve surgery. It does not require any anesthesia or sedation, as the patient remains awake and alert during the treatment
- Non-systemic, meaning that it is not taken by mouth and does not circulate in the blood stream throughout the body, thereby eliminating side effects such as weight gain, decreased libido, gastrointestinal problems, etc.
The typical initial treatment course consists of at least 5 treatments per week over a 6 week period. Each treatment session lasts approximately 30 minutes.
