If you’re living with OCD, it’s not uncommon to feel like you don’t have control over your life. Your obsessions and compulsions can drive your day, keeping you from activities you love and forcing you to loop in unenjoyable habits. If you have tried medication but aren’t happy with the results – or just want to enjoy your life more fully – we have good news. The FDA just recently approved one of the most promising treatments for OCD: TMS therapy.
The Basics of TMS Therapy
The TMS therapy we provide uses Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (dTMS) to activate certain portions of your brain. TMS therapy targets underactive nerve cells, stimulating the regions of your brain that balance your mood with a pulsed magnetic field. This can rebalance your brain chemistry. The magnetic field is very similar to the one created by an MRI machine.
Calabasas Behavioral Health has long been a pioneer of this innovative, highly-effective treatment; we’ve been using it to treat depression since 2011. Now, thanks to the recent FDA approval of TMS as one of the leading alternative treatments for OCD (alternative to medication and psychotherapy such as cognitive behavioral therapy), we are excited to offer it to our patients living with obsessive-compulsive disorder.
TMS Leads the Newest Treatments for OCD
Many individuals have grown frustrated with medications and Exposure Response Prevention Therapy (ERP) not providing the results they’re looking for. In fact, 50% of patients with OCD do not receive an adequate response from medications or ERP. Every individual living with OCD would certainly appreciate treatment less dependent on medication. You’ve probably watched as various alternate treatments for OCD have been developed, many with mixed results.
TMS therapy makes good on the promise of medical breakthroughs. During FDA trials, institutions like the Mayo Clinic, Stanford University, and Columbia University saw notable patient improvement through TMS. As a highly effective OCD treatment without medication that can deliver long-term results, it can be a game-changer. Today, we’re thrilled to offer our patients this safe, FDA-approved OCD treatment.
What to Expect with TMS Therapy for OCD
At Calabasas Behavioral Health, we use the BrainsWay Deep TMS device, which regulates the abnormal brain circuit activity associated with obsessive-compulsive disorder. We will work closely with you as well as with your psychotherapist to develop an effective personalized treatment plan.
For most patients, we recommend six weeks of five of these particular treatments for OCD per week. Each session lasts just 20 minutes and you can continue on with your day, even driving, immediately after.
To maximize the effectiveness of your OCD treatment, we will work with you to develop a personalized plan. That may include talk therapy, support group sessions, working with your other healthcare providers, and/or medication management.
As one of the first practices in the nation to offer TMS therapy back in 2011, Calabasas Behavioral Health has the benefit of years of experience in this innovative, alternate treatment for OCD. We’re building on that experience and are proud to be one of the first providers of TMS treatment for OCD in the country.
